“Snowy, your Uncle Zhou is here!”
Snowy could vaguely overheard her mother nagging about how her daughter was young and and immature and obsessed with the Internet.
“Coming!” Snowy yelled before she mumbled to herself, “I just woke up, how am I already immature and obsessed with the Internet?”
She closed her laptop and took Snowball off her lap before she reluctantly went downstairs.
The Spring Festival was a hassle every year, from morning till night there were countless visitors. She had to address them with various titles, like uncle and auntie, with a fake smile. She smiled so much, her face would get sore. Of course, there was always a reward for her trouble, which came in the form of many red packets.
Her parents sat on the sofa, chatting with a well-dressed man who looked to be in his forties.
Snowy didn’t recognize the man her mother said was her Uncle Zhou. This didn’t surprise her, as there were many people she didn’t recognize or forgot about.
Each time someone visited, Snowy’s mother would call her down to greet them—and just for calling them uncle, auntie, sister or brother—receive red packets.
Since Snowy had met so many visitors, she could tell with one glance that this man was of low status, just like the young men who craved her father’s investment.
When the man saw Snowy, he immediately stood up with a smile and said, “Is this her? She’s really pretty. I’ve heard others say that the Jiang’s daughter was both smart and cute, seems like the rumours were true!”
Snowy’s mother always loved when others praised her daughter, so she smiled from ear to ear, but she didn’t forget to act humble. “You over-praise her, my daughter may be everything you said, but she’s very playful.”
“She’s still young, she can afford to be playful. Plus, it’s better than being gloomy all day, right?” the man replied.
“Yes! She’s really lovely!” Snowy’s mother nodded, accepting his compliments. She turned around to see Snowy lingering in a corner.”Snowy, what are you just standing there for? This is your Uncle Zhou, come and greet him.”
As per routine, Snowy put on a fake smile and bowed. “Uncle Zhou, Happy New Year! May all your wishes be granted for a year of smooth sailing.”
“Look at her, so obedient and mature.” Zhou Cheng practically glowed. “Come here Snowy, I have a small red packet for you. Happy New Year, may you grow prettier everyday!”
He reached into his pocket, took out a red packet, and handed it to Snowy.
Snowy was used to receiving big red packets, so she thought he was being humble when he said “small red packet.” Little did she know that it actually was a small red packet.
She was surprised, but still took the red packet. It was very light and thin and soft, not like a stack of notes.
it felt like a single note or a thin piece of paper, but family wouldn’t be so stingy, right? Did the note have some kind of significance?
If it were a stack of notes, Snowy wouldn’t have paid any attention to it, but because the red packet was thin, Snowy was curious, and quickly opened the red packet.
Just as she expected, there was only a piece of white paper.
Snowy grabbed the blank piece of paper and pulled it out. She opened it to see a string of jumbled numbers and letters and mumbled, “Uncle Zhou, what’s this? 3Ztnc5ss3J?”
Jiang Tianda thought that what his daughter did was very impolite, how could she open the red packet right in front of the visitor? He glared at Snowy, but as he caught a glimpse of the blank piece of paper, he was confused as well.
“Haha!” Zhou Cheng smiled. “I think that giving cash is a little tasteless, I wanted to to change it up this year. The code is actually a password to a Bitcoin Wallet, within the wallet is a few Bitcoins. It’s my New Year’s gift to Snowy.”
Snowy didn’t understand. “So, how do I use this?”
Zhou Cheng had racked his brain before he thought of the Bitcoin idea. He knew that many people would visit the Jiang’s, so he wanted to bring a gift that stood out.
He eloquently explained how to use the code, all the while his hidden intention was to show Jiang Tianda his knowledge of leading concepts as an entrepreneur in the IT industry, to get his support and investment.
Snowy was still a bit confused, so Zhou Cheng left his Wechat information for her to use if she had more questions.
Jiang was fascinated with the concept.
Zhou Cheng, seeing that his objective was met, decided to excuse himself.
Jiang Tianda walked him out.
While he was outside, Zhou Cheng once again tried to hint at the issue of investment, and by the way Jiang Tianda spoke, it seemed like it might happen. He left Jiang Tianda feeling grateful.
As Zhou Cheng didn’t mention out how many Bitcoins were in the wallet and the worth of the Bitcoins, Snowy quickly ran up to her room and turned on her computer as soon as he left. By the time her computer started, she had forgotten how to download the Bitcoin app.
Just as she was about to message Zhou Cheng on Wechat, she saw that there was a message from Zhang Zian’s store: “Emergency help needed! The store requires fresh Crucian Carps, all suppliers will be heavily rewarded with a New Year’s red packet from the store!”
Snowy’s curiosity was immediately shifted from the Bitcoin dilemma to the Crucian Carps. Why did Zhang Zian need Crucian Carps? Was he craving them?
Snowy didn’t believe that Zhang Zian would provide any actual rewards, there would probably be dried fish in the red packet.
