Chapter 514.1: This Child Is Probably… (1)
How different were the humans on the Sia Continent from those in Roel’s previous life?
Roel didn’t think he was qualified to answer that question with his limited biology knowledge, and he wasn’t interested in dissecting a human body to uncover the answer either. That being said, looking at just appearances, there didn’t seem to be much of a difference between the two.
The additional element of mana in the Sia Continent only seemed to have induced a diverse range of hair colors in the general human populace. While transcendents and inheritors of certain bloodlines experienced physical changes when they deepened their Degree of Assimilation, these changes were usually not too over the top. They still retained their human characteristics to a large extent.
This was especially so when it came to newborns. It was impossible to tell apart a newborn in the Sia Continent from a newborn in Roel’s previous world.
But today, Roel learned why the sages of the past had always preached not to judge a book by its cover. He would have never imagined that Charlotte, despite looking human in every way, had reached a point where she could no longer be considered to be a human on the inside.
This also answered some of the questions he harbored.
It explained why Charlotte had such a beautiful appearance and a noble disposition. That had probably been a physical mutation caused by the High Elf Bloodline flowing through her veins. It felt liberating to have found an answer to that question.
But as someone who possessed modern medical knowledge, Roel seriously doubted Peytra’s talk about ‘ten draws’. He knew how fertilization worked, and he thought that the process should be the same on the Sia Continent. After all, their acts of reproduction were the same.
Building on that foundation, there was a huge fallacy in Peytra’s ‘ten draws’.
From a scientific perspective, it was true that doing it ten times would bring about a higher chance of success than just doing it once, but the increment was only marginal at best. The so-called ‘ten draws’ was nothing more than a gimmick.
Besides, ‘ten draws’, you say? Do you take me to be a horse or something?
Roel didn’t hesitate to express his skepticism toward what Peytra had just said, but the latter had no intention of taking her words back.
“You’re right. Doing it once would have suffice for most couples. There isn’t much point in doing it excessively. However, it’s different for the two of you.”
“What do you mean, Lord Peytra?”
“I’m asking the two of you to do it more not to increase the chances of pregnancy but to trigger my blessing.”
“Hm?”
Roel was still confused. He couldn’t understand how the blessing came into the picture here. Peytra heaved a helpless sigh before explaining the matter.
“Your situation is too peculiar that I had to resort to alternative measures. It’s not that ordinary blessings don’t work, but their effects are underwhelming. Let me put it this way. Even if the two of you went at it every single day, it would still take at least ten years for you to have a child.”
“Ten years?!”
Unable to accept the outcome, Charlotte exclaimed in astonishment.
As if it wasn’t grueling enough for her to wait ten years to have a child, she understood that the ten years estimate was likely to be further lengthened as neither Roel nor her had the luxury to stay together with each other.
She was the successor of the Rosa Merchant Confederacy, and the sheer amount of work she had to deal with on a daily basis exceeded even that of Roel, especially now that humankind was at war with the deviants. The only reason she could still spare time for Roel was due to her reduced workload as a patient, but she would have to pull her weight once she recovered.
On the other hand, Roel was standing in the eye of the storm unfolding in the Sia Continent. The Mother Goddess occasionally checked in on him. The Savior’s worshipers took special care of him. The Saints Convocation visited him every now and then. The Six Calamities were huge fans of him. His life was more happening than anyone else’s.
Given their respective circumstances, it was inevitable that they would spend more time apart than together. It would already be a blessing if they could spend three months together in a year, but even so, that meant that it would take forty years for her to get pregnant!
Even with her extended lifespan as a transcendent, forty years was simply too long for Charlotte to bear!
Other families would have had two generations of offspring by then, but she would still be clutching onto her tummy praying for a miracle. How could she possibly accept that?
Roel’s face also turned livid upon hearing the Peytra’s evaluation.
He couldn’t even begin to imagine the sheer mental strain Charlotte would be put through as she faced countless cycles of anticipation and disappointment of having a child. There was no greater torture in the world to her than that.
Peytra was hardly surprised by their dismay.
“That’s why I have prepared a second measure. For that, I’ll bestow you with a temporary but highly potent blessing.”
“A temporary but highly potent blessing?”
“Indeed. It’ll only last for several minutes, but its potency will be manyfold. I used to bestow this blessing upon races who are either efficient in their reproductive activity or have a dismally low level of fertility.”
Peytra went on to list a few examples, but Roel had never heard of those races before. He reckoned that those races had gone extinct shortly after Peytra passed away… though he was more concerned with the duration Peytra had stated more than anything else.
Several minutes… Why do I feel like I’m being insulted here?
Roel felt a little conflicted about the situation.
As a high transcendent, his stamina and endurance far surpassed that of ordinary humans. Several minutes was simply too short for him to do his thing. He thought about how long their previous session was and considered speaking up about it.
Unexpectedly, a blushing Charlotte beat him to it.
“About that, Lord Peytra, a few minutes might not be enough for darling.”
Thinking about the numerous occasions she had been knocked out, Charlotte subconsciously glanced at Roel. As soon as they met gazes, she hurriedly averted her eyes and lowered her head in embarrassment.
Peytra expressed her understanding regarding that matter.
“I know. You are both high transcendents. It’s only normal for your sessions to be longer. You don’t have to worry about that. All I have to do is to time the blessing with greater precision so as to fit into a smaller window.”
“You mean…”
“Yes, the blessing will automatically activate whenever the male has a go. That’s why I mentioned ‘ten draws’.”
Peytra turned to Roel as she answered their questions cheerily.
“It doesn’t matter to normal people whether they do it once or ten times, but in your case, you’ll be able to refresh the blessing each time you have a go. Every shot you take will have an equal chance of success. Thus, the more times you do it, the likelier you’ll have a child.”
“I didn’t think that it’d be possible to do it this way. How potent is the blessing?” asked Roel.
“It’ll at least grant you a tenfold chance of having a child. Of course, luck still plays an important role here,” the Primordial Earth Goddess replied with a smile.
Roel perked up as soon as he heard how effective the blessing was.
Similarly, Charlotte also began trembling in excitement.
The infertility debuff stemming from her High Elf Bloodline had always been a knot in her heart. She felt a rush of relief upon learning that there was a solution for it.
“Lord Peytra, may I know when will the blessing start taking effect?”
“The blessing is already active. It uses the male as the catalyst and the female as the medium. You can activate the blessing whenever you want as long as the two of you are together,” replied Peytra.
Roel and Charlotte immediately closed their eyes to feel for the blessing that had already been placed on them. Much to their surprise, that wasn’t the end of Peytra’s gift pack.
“I should mention that the high potency of the blessing will affect your offspring too. They’ll receive my blessing at birth. It should manifest in the form of an ability,” Peytra added with a smile.
“!”
Roel was flabbergasted to hear that.
A blessing from the Primordial Earth Goddess would boost one’s affinity with the earth, and Jewel Magic happened to be of the earth attribute too. In other words, their offspring would be born with the potential to become the strongest Jewel Magic user in the world even if he didn’t awaken to any of their bloodlines.
And if he awakened to Charlotte’s High Elf Bloodline or my Kingmaker Bloodline on top of that…
Roel’s cheeks twitched just at the thought of that.
On the other hand, Charlotte began profusely thanking Peytra for everything. She knew that the blessing that benefited even the child was a special favor from the Primordial Earth Goddess, and it wasn’t to be taken for granted.
“This is all I can do for you. The rest is up to you.”
Leaving those words behind, Peytra bade them farewell with a motherly smile before she returned to her tranquil mountain valley, leaving Roel and Charlotte alone in the glass house.
There was a moment of silence before Charlotte snapped out of her daze and grabbed the sleeves of Roel’s shirt. Her face was reddened.
“Darling, has Lord Peytra left?”
“It looks like it.”
“T-then… shall we begin? I-I mean, we have to try out the effects of the blessing…”
Charlotte was blushing to the tips of her ears as she mustered her courage to look at Roel with her glistening eyes. Her breathing had gotten a little rougher. Looking at her, Roel’s face unwittingly turned red as well. He cleared his throat and nodded in agreement.
“Yes, we ought to try out the blessing.”
Roel grabbed Charlotte’s hand and guided her toward their bedroom. With hearts bursting with anticipation, their night was just about to begin.
