Chapter 169 Lets Break Up 1
Since Elaine met Ye Xiaozu, she'd always wondered why he had acted the way he did. She had heard several bad rumors about Ye Xiaoting, his father, but Ye Xiaozu had never shown any interest to confide anything with her.
Even before their engagement, there were gossips about him being a womanizer, but once their engagement had been set, Ye Xiaozu was never seen with another woman by his side, except for her. Whether it was out of respect or because he didn't want to get a bad impression by cheating behind her back, Elaine wasn't sure.
He always had this cold mask on his face and high walls around him that she couldn't get through. Ye Xiaozu always kept her at an arm's length and Elaine never forced him to accept her. However, that didn't mean that she didn't try to get close to him.
Just like Ye Xiaozu, Elaine Wu was an heiress of a wealthy family back in Singapore. However, she wasn't actively involved in their family business as her self-esteem was too low to get along with other associates in her field.
Lucky for her, her father didn't force her to do what she didn't want, even her engagement with Ye Xiaozu had her permission. It wasn't that she had feelings for the stoic man, but Elaine felt that by being his wife, she would be able to contribute or help to strengthen her family's business ties through her marriage.
It was a stupid idea, true. But for Elaine Wu, who still hadn't realized what she wanted to do with her life, she could only go with the flow.
She understood that it was her fault that Ye Xiaozu had gotten mad at her the other night with her unannounced visit. If she hadn't forced him and dragged him out to drink, Ye Xiaozu wouldn't have snapped due to her incessant chattering.
Perhaps, he wanted to meet her today to talk about it? She wondered. But he sounded so serious over the phone, would there be any reason why he wanted to meet her?
Preparing for the day, she completed her daily routine first before dressing up to meet Ye Xiaozu at the nearest shopping mall in her area.
She didn't need to wait for too long as she spotted her fiance walking towards the cafeteria where they were supposed to meet. Waving a hand to get his attention, Ye Xiaozu made his way towards her and took a seat across her.
"Did you wait for too long?" He asked before flipping the menu open.
Shaking her head in response, she sipped her strawberry smoothie before answering him.
"No, I just arrived. You are just in time."
"What do you want to talk about?" Elaine asked. She felt a little tired since Ye Xiaozu woke her much earlier than her usual waking time.
Ye Xiaozu remained silent for a moment. His hands tightly clenched on top of the table while his brows drew in a straight line. Was there a better way to tell her about his intention to break their engagement, other than this? He pondered.
He just wanted to get it over with and regain his freedom. He was aware that Elaine Wu didn't feel anything for him either and had only agreed to the arrangement because of her family's intention to strengthen the partnership between their businesses.
"Elaine, what do you think…" He paused and looked straight into her eyes. It wasn't like he was cheating on her or anything, but he'd rather deal with Lu Tianxin and his possible son without complicating things with Elaine Wu.
"Let's break up," he said with a straight face. "I don't wanna get married anymore."
Elaine stopped sipping her drink and stared back at him with wide eyes. She blinked twice and slightly pinched her own arm to make sure she wasn't hearing things.
Did he just say they should break up?
"But why?" She couldn't help but blurt out her confusion.
Truth to be told, she had anticipated that this might happen sooner or later. She wondered how long it would take for Ye Xiaozu to break away from his father's influence and dissolve this engagement between them.
Ye Xiaozu fell silent once again, as if he was trying to find the right words to say so he wouldn't offend her.
"Is it because of that woman?" Elaine Wu asked.
She once heard from her circle of friends that Ye Xiaozu used to have a long time girlfriend back here in Shenzhen, before he was forcibly thrown to Singapore by his father. Being the hopeless romantic that she was, Elaine was curious if Ye Xiaozu managed to meet his ex-girlfriend since his return. Ah, perhaps she should stop pulling all-nighters just to catch up with the romance novels she'd been binging these days.
It was Ye Xiaozu's turn to look at her in shock. He hadn't expected her to drop that question.
He cleared his throat and looked away. Why did he feel guilty anyway? He didn't do anything yet!
"Yes, I met her." He admitted. Since she'd put it that way, there's no point in going in circles.
"Ah," Elaine said and realized that this was the first time she'd seen another expression on his face that wasn't anger or annoyance. His eyes visibly softened when she mentioned 'that woman'.
Why couldn't she have a man who could do the same for her? It must be really nice to have someone who treats you like you are the world to them. She thought.
