Chapter 505 - Shes My Friend (1)
"So do you remember now?" Yang Huan asked the newly wedded couple. His eyes were on Feng Tianyi with a wide grin on his face. He knew very well that it was one of those memories that the devil had tried to forget, since Yu'er had left Guilin without bidding goodbye to Feng Tianyi.
"Yes! I remember now." The end of Feng Tianyi's lips turned down at the memories. He had liked that little girl's company and had gotten used to her appearing in the afternoons to spend time with him.
However, she suddenly stopped coming altogether. Young Feng Tianyi had known that she would have to leave Guilin earlier than him, but he expected that she would at least bid her goodbye before she did.
"I received a phone call just now. Yu'er and her father left with the Li family an hour ago." His Uncle Yang told him when the older man found him under the same tree waiting for the little girl.
Feng Tianyi only hummed and stood up, brushing away the dirt from his pants before walking away.
Yang Huan had only stared at the boy's retreating figure, aware that he was upset over the girl's sudden departure. He understood right then and there why his godson accepted the girl's company.
They were both different and they didn't care for others, because they understood each other better than anyone else.
Did her father forbid her to see him before leaving? Young Feng Tianyi thought. That was possible, considering that the man didn't seem to appreciate that his young daughter preferred his company over him, her own father.
He wouldn't admit it to anyone, but he truly enjoyed spending time with her. The girl knew when to keep silent when he wasn't in the mood and knew what to say when he was upset with others. She wasn't as irritating as others, although Feng Tianyi had to admit that the girl had a smart mouth for her young age.
And when she left without a word for him, Feng Tianyi was worried that she would be returning to an abusive home. Yu'er was just a kid and he found out about her nightmares when she had spent the night with them. He couldn't understand why her own mother tried to beat her up.
Maybe she was Yu'er's stepmother? He thought. After reading books and seeing TV shows that depicted stepmothers as evil, his young mind wondered if it was the same for the little girl.
Yu'er didn't look like she was scared. In fact, Feng Tianyi wouldn't have noticed that she was being abused if not for that piercing scream that came from the guest room she was staying in. She had been crying hysterically, apologizing incessantly over something neither Feng Tianyi nor Yang Huan could understand. Seeing her crying had broken what was left of his heart.
Feng Tianyi's lips pressed into a thin line as he watched his Uncle Yang's daughter try to pacify the young girl, lulling her back to sleep. The more he thought about it, the more he realized that he and Yu'er were on the same boat.
They shouldn't be hurt. They were just kids who knew nothing about the a.d.u.l.ts' issues with each other. Why should they get caught between them? He and Yu'er didn't deserve to suffer like this.
Anyway, had he known that she would be leaving today, he should have treated her more nicely yesterday. He should have spent more time with her.
"Why won't you play with me anyway?" Yu'er asked him yesterday. "It's not like I'm asking you to play house with me."
At those words, Feng Tianyi tried to hide his blushing face from the girl. He didn't have the heart to confess and tell her that he wasn't a 'big sister', but a 'big brother' instead. He feared that she would misunderstand and think that he had purposely deceived her.
"But I don't like to." His frown deepened. Why was she insisting to go back to the woods, considering they had seen a snake out there during their first meeting? What was she up to anyway?
"You could just tell me you don't like me." She muttered lowly.
"Who said I don't like you?" Feng Tianyi defended himself as soon as he noticed that her doe-like eyes turned misty. Hell no. He wouldn't allow her to cry because of him!
"Hey, are you crying?" He asked nervously. "Don't cry! People might think I'm bullying you. Hey, don't cry, okay? I don't wanna play, but we can think of something else to do, other than that of course."
Yu'er sniffed and nodded her head in agreement, allowing young Feng Tianyi to release a breath he didn't know he was holding. The girl then took his hand, much to his shock.
No other children, including his cousins, were brave enough to touch him like she did. She only grinned at him as she dragged him back inside his Uncle's rest house to find something to eat.
"Then big sister, I'm hungry. You must feed me something delicious again."
Feng Tianyi rolled his eyes. The little girl might be small, but she had a huge appetite. He also didn't want to admit that she looked cute whenever she ate. Her chubby cheeks were bulging as she chewed her meal quietly. It made him want to feed her more and more.
He could only sigh and shook his head at this girl's outrageousness. He had never met a person as demanding as she was. Not even his parents could annoy him like this. At that point in his life, Feng Tianyi had never looked after another person as he was doing for her right now.
Yu'er looked at him as she ate. Feng Tianyi turned his head away, avoiding her gaze, but she was content nonetheless. She enjoyed his company and he never questioned her too much.
Aside from her best friend, this big sister was the second person who didn't look at her with reservation. Big sister didn't mind being with her.
