Chapter 620 - The Tang Siblings (3)
Tang Beixuan lowered his eyes before turning to look out the window. What Zhang Jiren said was right, but Tang Beixuan felt that he had been useless all this time. He had failed to protect both of his sisters from their misfortunes and from the men who abused them.
As their brother, he should be the first one to protect them, but instead, it was always his sisters who looked out for him—especially Tang Moyu.
"I've been a useless brother to them. I wish I could do something for my sisters," he mumbled to himself but was loud enough for Zhang Jiren to hear.
"Being safe and happy is the best you can do for your sisters. Don't you know that?" Zhang Jiren said in response. "As long as you don't give them problems, you are helping them by not being a burden."
Tang Beixuan glanced at Zhang Jiren's serious face. The man had his focus on the road as he drove towards the airport that late afternoon. The light coming from the setting sun across the horizon made Tang Beixuan aware of Zheng Jiren's facial features.
He didn't understand why he kept comparing this man to his Moyu Jie. Even now, Tang Beixuan was confused as to why Zhang Jiren resembled his father, Tang Lixue, up close. What were the chances that Zhang Jiren was a Tang and not a Zhang? He wondered.
However, his thoughts were put to a halt when Zhang Jiren suddenly faced him after stopping at a red light.
"You aren't useless, Tang Beixuan. Stop overthinking things, or you might miss some pressing matters on your hand." He heard Zhang Jiren say.
Tang Beixuan knew that what Zhang Jiren said was right, but still… was there anything he could do to prove that he could be a decent brother to his sisters and not just waiting for them to pamper him?
Anyway, since Zhang Jiren put it that way, then he wouldn't try to make troubles that might inconvenience his sisters. He knew how his Moyu Jie and Big Bro were busy these days, and he didn't want to add more problems to their plate.
It didn't take too long for them to reach the airport. They found Tang Wanyu seated on the corner of the arrival lounge, with a face mask covering half of her face. She stood up once she saw Tang Beixuan coming her way and pulled him into an embrace.
"Oh, Beixuan. It's been a while since I last saw you. Look at you!" She gently patted the side of his face, earning a frown from her brother.
"Wan Jie! I'm not a kid anymore!" Tang Beixuan grumbled, making his sister laugh in return.
When Tang Wanyu looked up, it was only then she realized that her brother didn't come here alone. Someone unlikely was in his company.
"Oh, Jiren. I didn't expect you to be here." She blinked at her cousin.
"My car just broke, sis. I have to ask Zhang Jiren a favor to bring me here," Tang Beixuan hurriedly explained the situation.
"Oh…" Tang Wanyu nodded in understanding.
She had met Zhang Jiren when they were younger. He was just recently taken in by the Zhang family back then when she first met him. He was just a young skinny boy who was having trouble fitting in his new life while she was a doll being raised by her 'mother'.
Zhang Jiren was being bullied by her other cousins because he was an illegitimate child that sprouted out of nowhere, but Tang Wanyu never saw or heard the man retaliate on any abuse he was subjected to. He could only lower his head, pretending he was hearing nothing.
Perhaps this was the reason why she paid attention to Zhang Jiren whenever she accompanied her 'mother' on visiting the Zhang Manor. She and Zhang Jiren were the same somehow, but she was glad to know that, unlike her who suffered misfortune from being forcedly married to Han Shaohui, Zhang Jiren was able to free himself from the bonds that held him down.
As Tang Wanyu looked at Zhang Jiren now—far from the young boy she had met in the past, the corner of her lips turned up into a smile. She released Tang Beixuan and also gave Zhang Jiren a gentle hug, much to the latter's shock.
"C-cousin Wanyu?" No one had shown this kindness and affection to him before so he wasn't sure how he should react.
Even Tang Beixuan was rendered speechless from his eldest sister's action. He had never thought that his sister Tang Wanyu had a good relationship with Zhang Jiren.
"Ah, I'm really glad that you are faring better now, Jiren. Since when did you return from Beijing?" Tang Wanyu asked once she released him.
Zhang Jiren blinked, still shocked by what happened, before it dawned upon him that Tang Wanyu was waiting for his answer.
"About six years ago. I heard you got married when I came back. I'm sorry I wasn't able to attend your wedding," he answered.
Tang Wanyu waved a hand, dismissing his apology while Tang Beixuan took her luggage.
"In case you still don't know, I already divorced my husband," she said nervously, looking around and hoping no one would recognize her. She was afraid that someone would notice her return and tell Han Shaohui where she was hiding.
"Why do you look so scared, Wan Jie?" Tang Beixuan knitted his brows once he saw his sister's stiff posture. "That useless husband of yours is already in jail. Moyu Jie and Big Bro made sure he wouldn't be walking out anytime soon and would serve his lifetime behind bars for all of his crimes."
Zhang Jiren didn't dare to comment on that, but he was aware of the Han family's fate and how they didn't end well because of his twin sister.
"Come on, Moyu Jie is waiting for us. I don't want to be late for dinner." They heard Tang Beixuan said.
