Chapter 626 - Dear Brother-in-Law (4)
Zhang Jiren nodded. Since Feng Tianyi had managed to corner him and discovered his identity long ago, then there was no point in lying to the devil at this point. Anyway, he would only answer Feng Tianyi's questions, but that didn't mean he would be willing to disclose everything he knew to his brother-in-law.
"Yes, Dad found out the truth about me. After I ran an investigation on Mom, I sought Dad in private. We ran a paternity test together which proved our familial ties to each other," he admitted.
Feng Tianyi covered half of his face with one hand and looked at Zhang Jiren in disbelief. He thought that his life before meeting Tang Moyu was pitiful and sad, but now, he realized that it must be incomparable to the loneliness Zhang Jiren suffered growing up.
Sent to the orphanage by his kidnappers, Zhang Jiren had grown up assuming he was abandoned by his parents at a young age. He had no idea that his mother had been killed, and he was f.o.r.c.i.b.l.y taken away from his father and his twin sister.
Feng Tianyi didn't need to ask what kind of life Zhang Jiren had before he was taken in by the Zhang family. The devil had seen and read Zhang Jiren's records before and couldn't imagine how hard it was for him growing up alone, not knowing where he belonged.
"Then, who else knew about you?" Zhang Jiren asked curiously. It would be dangerous for Tang Moyu and for him as well if more people knew the truth about his identity.
It made sense to Feng Tianyi why Tang Lixue and Zhang Jiren decided to keep his wife in the dark for too long. Although he felt a little bad for Tang Moyu, if her safety was the concern, then he would keep mum about this, too.
"Obviously, that old vulture knew who I really am. Isn't that why he decided to keep me and took me in as a Zhang?" Zhang Jiren spat out the words filled with disgust. However, he also knew that he had no other choice but to pretend that he was still oblivious to the truth about his real family.
"I see…" Feng Tianyi lightly tapped the desk in front of him, his eyes watching the streaks of raindrops on the glass windows of the room they were in.
So it turned out that Zhang Jiren was still bearing a grudge against the Zhang family, but he needed to pretend that he was loyal to them.
"I can help you clear things out with Moyu if you want…" Feng Tianyi offered to his brother-in-law, but Zhang Jiren shook his head, turning the offer down.
"No, not yet. I don't think both of us are ready for that." He must sound like a coward right now, but Zhang Jiren truly didn't know if he had a face to see his twin sister.
The devil could only accept that kind of answer. Not only would this be a great shock to Tang Moyu, but he had no idea how this would change how things were now. If he was in Zhang Jiren's shoes, he was free to curse everyone and come clean to Moyu. However, Zhang Jiren was not him.
Still, Feng Tianyi felt awful for knowing. When He Lianchen arrived earlier to give him the preliminary result of his investigation—before Zhang Jiren came with the Tang siblings, Feng Tianyi pondered if he should tell this vital information to his wife.
Even after hearing from Zhang Jiren, he still wanted to give it a little push… for Tang Moyu's sake. As well as Zhang Jiren's.
"Why? I thought you would be happy if you were reunited with Moyu. Don't you want her to know that the brother she thought she lost is still alive?"
Zhang Jiren only gave him a weak smile. He wasn't sure if Feng Tianyi would be able to understand where he was coming from.
"Of course, I do." He sighed and ran his fingers through his thick mane, his eyes comparable to the cold eyes Tang Moyu usually had. Just by looking closely at Zhang Jiren's face, Feng Tianyi could see the resemblance between him and his wife.
"More than anything else, I want to be reunited with her. I want my Moyu Jie to acknowledge me as her brother."
"Then, why?" The devil continued to probe. "What's stopping you to be happy, Zhang Jiren? Don't you think the Zhang family had deprived you enough?"
"Do you think it's easy for me to stay on the sidelines—become content just from seeing my sister from afar?" Zhang Jiren retaliated with a deep frown on his handsome face. "So many times, I have imagined our reunion in my head a hundred times now, but I know it wouldn't be easy not just for me… but for her as well."
They'd been apart from each other for almost three decades, and Tang Moyu didn't even know he existed. Even if he came clean now and revealed himself, Zhang Jiren wouldn't be able to take it if Tang Moyu learned to hate him.
"Feng Tianyi, I'm sure you would understand why if you know my reasons." Zhang Jiren clasped his hands together, his elbows pressing against his lean t.h.i.g.hs as he leaned forward on his seat.
"I'm not a good man, Feng Tianyi. I've done horrible things that Moyu Jie might not even understand. I don't think Moyu Jie will accept me once she finds out what kind of person her twin brother has become."
At those words, Feng Tianyi fell silent. Zhang Jiren was right. Of course, he also felt the same. He didn't think he would be able to endure it if Tang Moyu detested him.
With the kind of past he had, how could he not be sympathetic with Zhang Jiren?
"Fine. I won't tell her if that's what you really want."
