“Let me know if you need me,” said Tong Wei. She wanted to stay, but she didn’t think she would be much of a help anyway. She decided to go home since her parents might be worried about her.
“Okay. I’ll drive you home.” Wang Yao drove Tong Wei home, then left after staying at her place for a short while.
“How come you stayed at his place for so many days?” asked Tong Wei’s parents after Wang Yao had gone.
“Nothing big. There were some issues with his house, so I stayed for a few extra days,” said Tong Wei.
“What issues?” asked her parents.
“He built a house in the village, and it caught fire, so he needs it to be fixed,” said Tong Wei.
“He built a house in the village? He’s not gonna buy a place in the town center?” asked her mother.
“He didn’t say that, but I think it’s pretty nice to live in the village,” said Tong Wei.
After what had happened the other night, Tong Wei thought it was quite nice to live in the village. People knew one another, helped one another. In the town center, people just say hello to their neighbors living in the same building. They probably didn’t visit one another for a whole year.
“Silly girl, what are you talking about?” Tong Wei’s mother immediately tried to correct her daughter’s point of view.
“I was just saying,” said Tong Wei.
Wang Yao didn’t rush home after he had left Tong Wei’s place. Instead, he drove to Wang Mingbao’s store. When he arrived at Wang Mingbao’s store, he happened to see Shen Qingqing running out of the store with tears in her eyes.
When he entered Wang Mingbao’s office, Wang Mingbao was smoking. He didn’t look happy, either.
“You’ve spoken to her?” asked Wang Yao.
“Yes, I’ve told her that I know her history. She tried to explain. I didn’t want to listen,” said Wang Mingbao.
Wang Yao didn’t say anything.
“What brings you here anyway?” asked Wang Mingbao.
“Can you ask about the status of the three guys who had been causing trouble for us? I want to know when they will be out of the jail,” said Wang Yao.
“No problem,” said Wang Mingbao.
He made the phone call right away.
It was late afternoon by the time Wang Yao had arrived home. He found Chen Boyuan in his house.
“Hey, you are back. He’s been waiting for you for over an hour,” said Zhang Xiuying.
“Hi, what brings you here?” asked Wang Yao.
“Here you are. My wife asked me to give this to you.” Chen Boyuan handed Wang Yao an envelope.
Wang Yao opened it.
It was his medical certificate.
He was thrilled.
This is fantastic!
“What’s going on, Dr. Wang?” asked Chen Boyuan softly as Wang Yao’s looked a bit weird.
“Nothing, nothing. Thank you very much,” said Wang Yao.
“That’s alright. My job is just to deliver this to you. You should thank Ms. Song. She arranged it,” said Chen Boyuan.
“I see. I will thank her in person,” said Wang Yao.
“If there is nothing else you want me to you, I need to go now,” said Chen Boyuan.
“Okay, see you later.” Wang Yao walked Chen Boyuan out of the house. He didn’t expect his medical certificate would arrive so soon.
Mission (Doing things with a good reason): Obtaining the medical certificate in ten months.
Reward: A medical book.
Punishment of failure: Taking back the ancient spring water. Reduce any two attributes by half.
Status: Complete.
He received the prompts from the system.
So I’ve completed the mission?
He had never completed any missions so unexpectedly. It was like what happened in the movies or novels, just not serious enough.
Complete!
The system did tell him he had completed the mission.
According to the missions he had completed previously, the mission of obtaining the medical certificate shouldn’t be an easy job. The system allowed him ten months to complete it. He didn’t expect he could complete it so quickly.
Wang Yao was rewarded of a medical book.
Which medical book?
Wang Yao went inside his room. He took a book out of the system. The name of the book was written in ancient Chinese: Treatise on Miscellaneous Diseases.
Wang Yao had never heard of this book. He knew Zhang Zhongjing, a famous Chinese Traditional Medical Practitioner in ancient China wrote a book called Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases. The book had always been highly regarded by all the Chinese Traditional Medical Practitioners. However, only a part of the book passed from generations to generations. The original book had long vanished, once Zhang Zhongjing had passed away.
Wang Yao couldn’t wait to read the book. He found that apart from the medical theory, there were also quite a few weird cases documented in the book. It seemed to be a notebook from an ancient practitioner. There were a lot of contents in the book, most of which Wang Yao had never read before.
Great!
The book was like a treasure trove.
Wang Yao kept reading the book. He was so into it that he forgot about the time.
The cases in the book were in great detail. Most cases were about rare diseases. For example, in one case, the female patient had severe stomach pain. She was vomiting and had diarrhea for months. She was given Mafei powder to take and a tumor was taken out of her stomach. The tumor was as big as a duck egg. Inside it there was stinky black water. After the incision was stitched up, the patient gradually recovered a few months later.
The treatment process was documented in details, including the herbal formula involved. Wang Yao even found the formula of Mafei powder.
The further Wang Yao read, the more he was interested in the book. He only realized it was late when his mother asked him to have dinner.
“What are you doing inside? I called you three times,” said Zhang Xiuying.
“Oh, I was reading a book and forgot about the time,” said Wang Yao.
“Come and have dinner,” said Zhang Xiuying.
The police had found the arsonists, so Wang Yao’s parents felt a bit better.
“Why did he set the fire?” asked Zhang Xiuying.
“Because of me,” said Wang Yao. “It was a medical incident.”
“Something went wrong when you treated him?” asked Zhang Xiuying.
“No, I didn’t treat him,” said Wang Yao with a smile.
“Why not?” asked Zhang Xiuying.
“He was not worth my time to treat him. Anyway, I don’t want to talk about it. Let’s eat,” said Wang Yao.
His parents didn’t ask anymore questions.
Wang Yao gave each of his parents a massage to help them relax after dinner. Then he went back to Nanshan Hill.
After he had gone back to Nanshan Hill, he walked around the hill before going back to his cottage. As soon as he had gone back to his cottage. He read Treatise on Miscellaneous Diseases until late night. He noticed it was already midnight, so he turned off the light and went to sleep.
“Shit!”
The person who arranged to set Wang Yao’s clinic on fire was cursing in a boutique apartment in Haiqu.
Pa! He threw a glass on the floor.
“What else can you do?!”
He was shouting like a mad dog.
It was not over yet.
He wouldn’t let Wang Yao off the hook.
The next day, Wang Yao went to the town center to ask about opening a clinic in the village. Li Maoshuang knew someone who could help Wang Yao.
“Clinic? Medical clinic?” asked Li Maoshuang’s friend.
“Yes,” said Wang Yao.
Li Maoshuang’s friend told Wang Yao that he needed to complete a number of forms, then submit relevant paperwork to the Health Department in the city. It took Wang Yao a whole day to complete all the forms and paperwork with assistance.
“This is already quick enough,” said Li Maoshuang with a smile after Wang Yao had submitted all the paperwork.
“Normally it will take at least two to three days,” added Li Maoshuang.
“I see. Thank you. Shall we have dinner together?” asked Wang Yao.
“No, thanks. I’ve got other plans tonight,” said Li Maoshuang.
“Okay, I’ll catch up with you later,” said Wang Yao.
“Sounds good,” said Li Maoshuang.
Now that Wang Yao had had the medical certificate and permit to run a medical clinic, his clinic could officially open. He decided to call it Nanshan Clinic.
It was 5 pm when Wang Yao arrived at home.
He found his mother looked upset.
“What’s wrong, Mom? You are not well?” asked Wang Yao.
“Your uncle’s wife has passed away,” said Zhang Xiuying sadly.
“Passed away? Wenbao’s mom?” asked Wang Yao.
“Yes, she died this afternoon,” said Zhang Xiuying.
Wang Yao didn’t speak.
“The disease won, in the end,” said Zhang Xiuying. “Can you come with me to your uncle’s place tomorrow?”
“Okay,” said Wang Yao.
Wenbao’s wedding was only a few days ago. Now they were having a funeral. Wang Yao didn’t know what Wenbao’s wife would think.
Wang Yao found a case of cancer in Treatise on Miscellaneous Diseases that evening.
The patient had a malignant tumor. He was treated with herbs and acupuncture for over three months. He fully recovered eventually.
Fully recovered!
According to the author’s description, the condition was very similar to cancer. It was really significant that the author of the book was able to cure cancer through herbal formula and acupuncture. It caught Wang Yao’s attention. He decided to work on how to treat cancer in the next few months.
The medical records was documented in the book, including the herbal formula.
What herbs were used?
Sculellaria barbata, Chinese brake herb, ebony……
Everything in the list were just common herbs.
Only these herbs can’t cure cancer, thought Wang Yao.
The system had filled Wang Yao’s head with rich knowledge of medicine and herbs. Wang Yao knew very well of the effect of herbs listed. They were effective in treating tumor, but had limited effect on cancer.
