Chapter 185: Someone Has to Protect Her
"Are you stuck somewhere?" he asked, wondering why she was calling. She wasn't the kind of woman who called up her significant other to boast about her accomplishments or cry about what went wrong with her meeting. So, he was confused why she had called.
But it had to be important. She would never disturb his work otherwise.
"Oh, just traffic," she said absentmindedly. "I had to tell you something important. It won't take much time," she said quietly. The tone of her voice didn't sit well with Mo Qingchen.
"Is something wrong?" he asked. One couldn't hear the change in his voice easily. But to these employees who were scolded ruthlessly by this block of ice on a regular basis, the tone was doting!
"Nothing is wrong," she said after a while of contemplation. "Uh, would you mind adding some security near the house?"
His eyes darkened. He looked at the others in the room and controlled his anger. "One second," he said into the phone. He muted the call and then looked at the person who was previously presenting.
"The meeting is dismissed. We'll talk about this tomorrow." He stormed out of the conference room without looking at the bewildered looks on everyone's faces. Not even one of them could say that their schedules were packed the next way.
He unmuted the call after leaving the room. "What happened? Tell me in detail," he demanded.
Qian Meng sighed. "I aggravated Bai Ye Qing during the meeting and he almost hit me with a glass of water," she admitted.
"He tried to splash water on you?" he exclaimed. His fingers curled up into fists.
"Uh, no. He… threw the glass in my… general direction."
"He hurt you?" he roared. "Where are you? Tell me!"
Qian Meng startled into silence. "I'm fine," she squeaked. "It didn't hurt me. I didn't even get any water on me. I'm fine!" she reassured. She tried to raise her voice over him to stop him from worrying. "I just think he might do something so I want to take precautions," Qian Meng told him.
"What about the police? What are they doing letting such a dangerous man roam around on the streets of Shanghai?" he sounded beyond his limits. He was about to explode from anger.
"They aren't investigating his file yet. Li Jun is going to follow up with them on the matter. Don't worry. Right now, we just have to catch him doing something horrendous and we can draw some attention to the issue." Her words were measured and only highlighted the scheme. It didn't leak her genuine worry of being attacked or hearing Mr. Bai had been hurt.
But Mo Qingchen understood it easily. "I'll call the security team immediately and inform them. Whose car did you take to the meeting?" he asked.
"I borrowed Li Min's car." Mo Qingchen had gotten extremely busy that morning and couldn't drop her off at the Bais company. So, she had taken Li Min's car.
"Okay, park the car in the private parking lot of your building and be safe when you go up. Call Li Min and instruct her to tighten security immediately." He paused. "I'll come over to your building when you are done with work and then drive us home, understood?" he barked.
Qian Meng hummed. "We won't have kickboxing lessons today?" she asked absentmindedly.
"You can still think of lessons? We'll practice in the gym at home if you aren't exhausted after work. Now, focus on the road."
His breathing was clearly uneven. Qian Meng stared at her screen and smiled. "Are you fuming?" she asked with a smirk.
"Don't laugh," he warned.
"When—"
"I can hear it in your voice," he scolded. "This is not a small matter. I'm on the verge of tracking him down and beating him to a pulp. The only thing holding me back is I might go to jail for a night. I have so much work to finish."
Qian Meng burst into laughter. She threw her head back and laughed until she felt all her tension seep out of her body. "I have an excellent lawyer who can make it seem like Bai Ye Qing tied you up and used your hand to hit himself. Want to try it?" she teased.
Mo Qingchen pressed his lips together. He didn't want to smile but her words amused him. "You realize that the damage I can inflict would be much worse than what your lawyer can prove is within limits, right?"
"At least we don't have to be worried about hospital bills," Qian Meng snickered. The elevator arrived and Mo Qingchen got in. There was a female employee going up to the floor below him.
She squeezed herself into the corner, as far away from him as possible.
"How long do you estimate you will need to reach the office? Should I ask part of the security team to escort you?" he asked casually.
"Now you're being ridiculous. He was still in the company when I left. Even if he had wings, he wouldn't be able to reach my building before me." There was logic in her words.
"He could hire someone," he told her blandly. Now that he mentioned it, maybe he should stand outside and wait for her to enter the building and escort her to her office. That was a possibility he should consider.
"He needs money to hire someone. He's an addict and a gambler. He is running debts that are hard to pay off. Even his credit cards are maxing out. Hiring hitmen is really hard!" Qian Meng told him mirthfully. "Stop being a worrywart."
He snorted. "One of us has to be. You're living the carefree life, thinking bad things won't happen."
Qian Meng clucked her tongue. "What would it be like to have a nagging father like you? I feel so loved and cared for," she joked.
Mo Qingchen huffed in irritation. "Believe me, I don't want to be your dad. Resolve your daddy issues somewhere else. It's not my cup of tea."
