Chapter 216: Dont Want to Disappoint Myself
She bolted into the bathroom, leaving Mo Qingchen in a state of worry and confusion.
He heard her stop speaking, but she had already closed the door. "What happened?" he asked as he stood right outside the door.
He heard her call from inside. "Mr. Bai was injured during the operation. Bai Ye Qing has been arrested. I need to go to the hospital immediately," she said. Mo Qingchen would hear the underlying tension in her voice.
He didn't miss a beat as he went to the closet and picked out his clothes as well. There was no way he would let Qian Meng drive in a state of panic, that too so late in the night. He didn't care for propriety as he threw his clothes aside and donned the new pair.
He was pulling his pant up when Qian Meng came out of the room. She looked surprised. "You're going too?" she asked.
"Of course," he told her. He gave her a look of offense as he buttoned the jeans. "What do you need to take?" he asked when he saw her panicked state. She was staring around the room listlessly.
"Purse. Phone. Car keys," she said finally.
Mo Qingchen hummed. He took his share of things and allowed her to look through her stuff.
"Take your identification card, too. We will need it to fill out papers at the hospital!" he called.
She nodded vehemently and dug through her purse to pull out her passport. "This will do, right?"
Mo Qingchen nodded. Of course, it would work, but in her panicked state, she couldn't think too hard. She was rational, more so than any normal person would be, but Mo Qingchen could see how much Qian Meng cared about Bai Yu to be genuinely scared for his wellbeing.
He was already in the driver's seat and watched her slide in. They were out in no time.
Qian Meng had already called the hospital while they drove to the hospital, just to make sure.
"He hasn't arrived yet," Qian Meng informed Mo Qingchen. He sped up the car, driving faster than any speed limit would allow him. "Slow down," she said finally when she looked at how fast they were going.
"It's better to reach earlier than worry about speeding tickets," Mo Qingchen spoke. "This late in the night, apart from the trucks transporting goods, no one else drives on the streets. Don't worry about an accident. I am an excellent driver."
Qian Meng gave him a small smile. "I'll pick up your speeding tickets. You're driving like a maniac because of me," she said after a while.
Mo Qingchen scoffed. "I just needed an excuse. I always wanted to know how it felt to drive this fast. All those games had me curious. I'm willing to pay in cash for this first-hand experience." He tried his best to make her feel less guilty.
They reached the hospital in relative silence. After that conversation, they thought about what would happen next.
The paperwork was extensive, to say the least. And it took Bai Yu a day and a half to regain consciousness for a few minutes. His eyes moved around the room and settled on Qian Meng. He gave a weak smile before he fell back to unconsciousness once again.
As his guardian, Qian Meng rarely left the hospital. Most of her calls were taken from the private lounge of the VIP section. She looked over proposals and oversaw the execution of the coming launches from the confines of the hospital.
Mo Qingchen, though, remained her bridge to the world. He brought her food from home, her daily dose of green tea latte. He even gave her the reports to their complete physical examination.
Qian Meng waited with bated breath when she held the folder. It was a thick file with all her reports and she was scared to find out what it contained.
"Why are you so afraid?" Mo Qingchen probed. He had been staring at her for the better of five minutes. She looked mildly panicked. "If you don't want to know what is inside, you don't need to see it," he assured her.
"Shouldn't I know what is wrong with my body? I want to know so that… I don't disappoint myself," she admitted casually.
"Think about it carefully. If there was something amiss, the hospital would have called me personally to inform me. Apart from being a VIP, it is the protocol for hospitals to inform patients about urgent matters and diagnosis, so that the patient isn't taken by surprise," he explained to her.
"So, you are sure there is nothing wrong with me?" she asked, arching her brows.
"I am not a doctor. But I can tell you one thing for sure. No matter what those reports say, I will be marrying you. I will stay by your side until the day both of us die. These reports change nothing."
A shred of panic took over once again. "Then there is something wrong," she confirmed.
Mo Qingchen pressed his lips together. "I told you there wasn't!" he countered.
"But you haven't looked inside, have you?"
Mo Qingchen shook his head.
Qian Meng steeled her heath and opened the envelope. She looked through the reports, one page at a time. It was part of her routine to read every word written on the paper, no matter if she understood or not. After inspecting most of it, she turned to the gynecology section.
Nothing jumped out. Everything was excellent. She had to search on the internet to make sure she was reading everything correctly. Her eyes watered slightly but she wiped them away quickly.
Mo Qingchen looked at her shoulder and felt his eyes darken when she took longer on those certain pages. Anger boiled inside him and he wondered if he should find the murderous couple and make them pay for what they did.
But this was a different world. Here, they hadn't hurt Qian Meng too badly. Did he have a right to? He pressed it down in his heart and waited for her.
