Chapter 224: Stupidity Should Be Punishable by the Law
"The minute you come out of prison, I will make sure someone follows you everywhere you go. Whichever apartment you want to rent to live in, my man will tell them what you did. When you try to get employed, they will tell your prospective employers how you stole and didn't care when someone died because of you. Everyone you try to be friends with will know that you are a homewrecker who stood by as someone was killed."
This last bit was said in anger. She had not necessarily stood by and watched Bai Ye Qing kill his 'wife.' But in another world… she probably had.
And he didn't care for the law. He needed revenge. He would not allow the stupid justice system to let these evil people walk around in society.
"But why?" Jia Ai cried. Her eyes flooded with tears and her vision of him blurred.
"Just because," was his ruthless reply. Tears poured out of her eyes when she realized that he was not joking. He meant what he said and he had the means of doing good on his threats.
Mo Qingchen felt oddly satisfied as he watched her cry. It made him feel better. He had no idea that the woman for whom he was taking revenge was sitting in the next room, staring blankly at the scene in front of her.
She had been left alone in the room and curiosity had gotten the best of her. After looking at the switchboard for a long time, she pressed the right button. The words in the other room filtered into her ears and she slumped down on the seat, absolutely in disbelief.
She had never thought Mo Qingchen to be capable of speaking so many words. It was against his principles. He was a man of few words and he enjoyed showing what he was capable of. The words said to Jia Ai were scathing, downright degrading, if she had to say it herself.
And she didn't understand what it meant.
She had not looked at Jia Ai even once and thought of doing anything to her, but Mo Qingchen… he was making it a point to single her out and make her life hell.
She couldn't fathom it.
A bubble of joy burst into her heart.
She didn't quite catch the meaning when he called her a homewrecker who stood by and watched people get murdered. She didn't think it was said in a literal sense. Because… how could Mo Qingchen know what happened in her dream?
Therefore, the thought did not register with her. Maybe, a long time later, she would reflect back on this moment and would get the clarity of what he had said.
She would finally understand that this stoic and cold man… he had done everything possible to ensure these people got what they deserved for killing her in another time. In another world.
But that day was not today.
She pressed the same switch once again when Jia Ai began to cry. Her heart shook and her wails grated on her nerves. She wondered how long Mo Qingchen would sit there.
Finally, she saw him move. He sat up in his chair and then slowly got up.
Qian Meng quickly got out of the room and pretended like she hadn't just heard every word he had said.
She smiled sweetly as she leaned against the wall and turned her head to see him come out.
He looked lost in his thought as he closed the door behind him, but in the next second, his eyes zeroed in on her and it widened just a little.
He looked almost guilty at being caught.
"Why are you standing here?" he asked, hastily going to her side.
"Waiting for you," she said, a preppy lilt in her voice. His brows furrowed but he didn't comment. Instead, he just nodded. He didn't want to answer her questions at that moment, so he would do anything to evade it.
"Why did you talk to her? She isn't really an important figure in our lives," Qian Meng said as they walked to the car.
Mo Qingchen turned to her with a stunned look. "You might be magnanimous and let her off, I don't feel like I owe her anything," he responded. He felt that she was let off easy. He could have done a little more to make her life miserable, but he also didn't want to stoop to their level and do something criminal.
What a dilemma.
"When did I become magnanimous? I am the pettiest person I know!" she protested. "Is this about Bai Ye Qing duping your sister?" she asked finally.
Mo Qingchen looked at her critically. "Do you not know the kind of person this Jia Ai is?" he asked. "She… looks… like the kind of person who would latch onto a man because he has money and then help him kill people," he said.
"And when did you become a righteous vigilante?" she joked.
He bit his lip. "The moment I realized that you would have been the one they could have killed."
Qian Meng startled. "What nonsense are you saying. Why would I let anyone kill me?" she laughed. But suddenly she felt nervous.
"Yes, you would be an idiot to marry that man and let him ruin you." Suddenly, Mo Qingchen felt angry at her, too. Yes, she had been stupid enough to marry him that time, too! Sure, she was the victim. But how could she have been so stupid?
He had to punish her as well. Stupidity should be punishable by the law!
He grabbed her shoulder and turned her to face him.
She stared at him, wondering what he was up to… "What are you doing?" she asked him slowly. She saw the conflict in his eyes but couldn't guess what it meant.
"Idiot," he muttered under his breath. His hand slid into her hair and he clutched it tightly in his fists and pulled her head back.
